For used household goods and personal belongings imported when transferring residence from outside the EU, Malta Tax and Customs Administration currently lists:

• completed Application Form;
• copy of passport or ID;
• proof of residence outside the EU for the previous 12 months;
• Certificate of Registration from the Commissioner for Tax & Customs;
• draft Import Declaration;
• detailed packing list including values.

Supporting documents are uploaded through the Maltese Import System as part of the customs-clearance process.

Used household goods and personal belongings may qualify for relief from import duties when you transfer your normal residence from outside the EU to Malta.

In general:

• you must have lived outside the EU continuously for at least 12 months;
• your belongings must have been in your ownership for at least 6 months before export;
• they must be intended for the same use at your new residence;
• they may be imported up to 6 months before you establish residence in Malta or within 12 months after establishing residence;
• qualifying goods cannot normally be lent, hired out, given as security or sold during the first 12 months after entering free circulation.

New items are subject to duty and VAT and must be declared separately.
