Things to do in Christchurch, New Zealand

Posted 5th August 2016

If you're moving to New Zealand, don't miss out on visiting Christchurch - the garden city situated on the eastern coast of New Zealand’s South Island, and well known for its dramatic vistas and beautiful scenery. This area is known as the gateway to the Canterbury region, and the Avon River running through the city can offer relaxing breaks. Along with its beautiful scenery and adventure sports the centre of the city is a thriving hub of business, with great nightlife and plenty for shopping enthusiasts.

A Change of Scenery

Whether you're thinking of relocating to New Zealand or you're just going for a break, you can’t go wrong if you choose Christchurch, as it has something for everyone. There's everything from botanic gardens to whale watching, and you could even try climbing NZ's highest mountain, known as Aoraki Mount Cook. The city is renowned for its culture and art galleries, but it’s also a huge draw for adrenaline junkies who love surfing, bungee jumping and many other outdoor activities.

Working in Christchurch

In 2010-11 the city was hit by a huge earthquake. This has made the people even more dedicated to protecting their heritage and improving their city. It also enticed skilled foreign workers to help with rebuilding and renovating parts of the city. The thriving economy means that it has the lowest unemployment rate in the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD's) membership. The ranges of jobs available vary from highly skilled IT specialists to the manufacturing sector.

Enjoying the City

The choices are endless if you want an amazing evening out. You could visit one of Christchurch’s many restaurants or bars, and if you are feeling flush you could try a spot of gambling and sample some cocktails. When you enter the casino you’ll find the Diamond Bar which is decorated with 3,500 hanging crystals. As with most high class bars there is a smart dress code, so you’ll have to change after you’ve been surfing!

Arts and History

The city of Christchurch has long been thought of as the most English in New Zealand, but its story goes back a lot further than the colonial period. Maori history records that humans first settled in the Canterbury area approximately a thousand years ago. Over the following centuries people migrated to the islands, but it wasn’t until the early 1800s that Europeans started setting up whaling stations. The transformational growth of the whole country can be seen in galleries and museums across the islands. Christchurch is also an amazing festival city, and every year new acts from around the world show off their skills to highly appreciative audiences.
