Importing Used Household Furniture into the Cayman Islands
The Cayman Islands provides a duty-free household-effects concession for people making a bona fide change of residence to the Islands, subject to Customs and Border Control requirements being met.
For household furniture to qualify, it generally needs to have been in your bona fide ownership and use abroad for at least six months and must not be imported for sale or commercial exchange.
The change of residence itself must be for a period exceeding 12 months. Qualifying household effects can generally be imported before your arrival or within six months after you arrive, unless Customs allows a longer period in special circumstances.
We help prepare the shipping paperwork and coordinate customs clearance with our Cayman Islands destination agent.
Who can qualify for the household-effects concession?
The concession is intended for people making a bona fide change of residence to the Cayman Islands for more than 12 months.
Qualifying household furniture must generally have been personally owned and used abroad for at least six months before import and must be intended for your own use rather than for sale or commercial exchange.
Customs and Border Control will determine whether your circumstances and goods qualify for the concession.
What documents will I need?
Documentation for a typical unaccompanied household shipment can include:
- A copy of your passport
- Relevant Cayman Islands Work Permit, Residence Permit or other evidence allowing you to reside in the Islands
- Completed CBC Form C5 – Unaccompanied Personal Effects Declaration
- A detailed packing inventory
- Bill of Lading or other shipping documentation
- Power of Attorney allowing the destination agent to deal with Customs on your behalf
We help prepare the shipping paperwork and coordinate the customs-clearance process with our destination agent.
Can I ship new furniture?
Yes, but newly purchased furniture should not be assumed to qualify for the household-effects concession.
New furniture will not normally meet the six-month ownership-and-use condition, so it needs to be identified and declared correctly and Customs duty can apply.
Keep invoices and evidence of value for newly purchased items and tell us about them before shipping.
Can I sell furniture after importing it duty-free?
Not immediately. Goods admitted duty-free under the household-effects provision are subject to restrictions on sale, hire, loan or other disposal.
The current concession applies a period of at least two years, subject to Customs conditions.
If you expect to dispose of imported furniture after arrival, check the customs implications first.
