Importing Used Household Furniture into Qatar
Used household furniture and personal effects can qualify for relief from customs duty when moving to Qatar, provided the relevant Qatar Customs conditions are met.
For non-Qataris arriving to work and reside in Qatar for the first time, qualifying furniture must be used, for personal rather than commercial use, and appropriate to normal household needs. The goods must normally arrive within six months of your entry into Qatar.
Different conditions apply to Qatari citizens returning permanently after living abroad. Qualifying furniture must already be used, and the returning citizen must generally provide evidence of having lived outside Qatar for at least three years.
We help prepare the shipment documentation and coordinate customs clearance with our destination partners in Qatar.
Who can qualify for customs-duty relief?
Qatar Customs provides relief for qualifying used personal effects and household furniture brought in by:
- Non-Qataris arriving to work and reside in Qatar for the first time.
- Qatari citizens returning permanently after residing abroad, subject to separate eligibility conditions.
For non-Qataris, the furniture must be used, intended for personal household use and imported in quantities appropriate to normal household needs rather than for trade.
Current GCC customs procedures also require expatriates claiming the exemption to provide evidence that they are coming for work or residence for a period of at least 365 days.
What documents will I need?
Documentation required for a Qatar household-effects shipment can include:
- Passport and identity documentation
- Copy of your Qatar residence permit / Qatar ID where applicable
- Employer confirmation for non-Qataris arriving to work in Qatar
- Detailed packing list or inventory
- Bill of Lading
- Delivery order
- Customs declaration and any authorisation required by the clearing agent
Returning Qatari citizens must also provide evidence supporting their period of residence outside Qatar.
Your Move Manager and destination agent will confirm the exact documents needed for your circumstances before the shipment arrives.
Can I ship new furniture?
Yes, but newly purchased furniture does not qualify under the same used-household-effects exemption.
Qatar Customs states that the exemption for people moving to Qatar applies to used household furniture and personal effects. New goods are therefore subject to the applicable customs tariff and should be declared separately.
Keep invoices and proof of purchase available for newly purchased furniture and tell us about any new items before shipping.
Qatar currently does not apply VAT, so the main tax consideration for non-qualifying furniture is the applicable customs duty rather than import VAT.
Can I sell duty-free furniture after it arrives?
Not immediately if you are a non-Qatari importing furniture under the first-arrival household-effects exemption.
Qatar Customs requires an undertaking not to dispose of the personal effects, household goods and furniture covered by the exemption for one year from the date of entry into Qatar.
If qualifying goods are sold or otherwise disposed of during that period, customs duties, other applicable charges and penalties can become payable.
