Importing Used Household Furniture into Dubai
Used household furniture imported for your own personal use can qualify for exemption from Dubai customs duty, subject to the applicable residency conditions and inspection by Dubai Customs. This can include sofas, tables, chairs, beds, wardrobes, cabinets and other used household furniture.
To qualify, the furniture should be used, imported in your name and in quantities appropriate for furnishing your home rather than for commercial use or resale. Foreign residents claiming the exemption will also need to provide evidence of their work and residence in the UAE.
We help prepare your shipping documentation and coordinate customs clearance in Dubai through our destination agents, helping to make sure the correct paperwork is in place before your furniture arrives.
Do I pay duty on new furniture?
New furniture does not qualify for the customs-duty exemption available to qualifying used household goods and personal effects. It must be declared correctly and the applicable customs duty will be levied.
If you are shipping newly purchased furniture alongside your used household furniture, tell us before shipping so that it can be identified and declared correctly. Keep invoices or other evidence of value available where applicable.
What documents will I need?
For personal-use household goods, Dubai Customs currently lists the following importer documents:
- A copy of your passport or Emirates ID
- A copy of your UAE residency visa
- A written list of the goods being imported
You will also need an accurate packing inventory for your furniture shipment. We will advise you on the shipping and clearance documentation required before your goods leave the UK.

Customs inspections
Furniture and personal-effects shipments are subject to inspection by Dubai Customs before they are released. Customs may check that the goods are genuinely for personal use, that used goods meet the conditions for duty exemption and that the shipment matches the declared inventory.
If an inspection or additional examination is required, clearance can take longer and additional handling, inspection or storage charges may sometimes apply.
We coordinate the clearance process with our destination agents in Dubai and will keep you informed if Customs requires additional information or examination of your shipment.
